If you are looking for a break from your typical routine, Thailand is one of the places that can make your vacation unforgettable. Discover the majestic views that this kingdom has to offer and enjoy Thai culture through its temples, cultural presentations, and sumptuous delicacies.
When in Thailand, there is quite a long list of things to do. You can consider a road trip wherein you stop at the restaurants to try the food and witness the soothing sunset by the beach. Thailand has beaches that offer several surfing spots for new or experienced enthusiasts to explore. These endless waves provide tons of excitement and help create new, lasting memories.
If the waves of Thailand are calling out to you, why not dedicate a day or two to surfing in Khao Lak? The sun, the sand, and the water will work together to make your visit remarkable. Here’s what you need to know:
Exploring the shores
Phuket’s west coast has some of the highly-regarded surfing locations in Thailand. These surfing spots cover 740 kilometers of coastline, and some of them are still undiscovered. If you’re looking for less crowded locations with a constant flow of good waves, head over to Pakarang Beach. You can access this paradise by driving north from the coast of Phuket and across the Sarasin Bridge. Though it’s not as popular as nearby destinations, Pakarang still offers the accommodations and the surfing gear that you need thanks to the family-friendly Khao Lak community. This short drive of about 60 kilometers from Sarasin is the ideal mini surfing trip that you can squeeze into your packed itinerary.
Other places to visit
You will fall in love with this laid back place that offers limitless scenic views while blazing the dirt path near the shore. This is the place to go if you want to experience Thai culture without the sizeable crowd. Memories Beach Bar provides the perfect setting for a calm moment while drinking your favorite beverage and experiencing the fine sand. This local-owned bar offers a serene view of the Andaman Sea by morning and soulful rhythms at night. Savor delicious Thai and Western dishes from morning to midnight while harmonizing with the beats that they play. If you want to meet more surfers, October is the highlight of Khao Lak’s surfing calendar because of the Khao Lak Surf Contest.
All your surfing needs provided
If you do not have any surfing gear, you can rent surfboards and other surfing equipment from the Pakarang Surf Shop. Located at the back of Memories, you can select from their wide array of shortboards and longboards to use. Surf instructors are also available to give you a crash course from paddling to keeping your balance and escaping perilous rip currents.
Best time to surf in Khao Lak
April to November is the peak surfing season because the waves are suitable for longboarding. It is also during these months when beginner surfers can learn to paddle, pop up, and ride the mellow waves. Be sure to check the weather forecast ahead of time to determine whether or not the waves are suitable for surfing.
How to get to Pakarang Beach
Once you cross Sarasin Bridge, follow the path through Highway 4 going to Khao Lak. After passing by JW Marriott, look for surfboard signage before Elephant Camp, which indicates the entrance to the narrow dirt road leading to Memories Beach Bar. This path stretches for about three kilometers and has a parking lot at the end.
A place to rest
If you’re looking for accommodation nearby, choose a place that is at the beachfront to avoid walking long distances. This hotel resort must have rooms spacious enough for you and your family or partner. Furthermore, check for the availability of laundry services so that you can pack lightly for the trip. It’s a good idea to also make sure that there is internet access, especially when you need to perform quick tasks for work.
Look for a place that allows transportation rentals for easier access to other tourist destinations nearby. Finally, book a resort hotel that offers relaxing Thai massage and sumptuous dishes that help you relax after a long day of surfing.
